We are a lively group looking at climate change and the environment. This is probably the biggest issue facing us today and particularly for our children and grandchildren’s generations. We try to strike a balance between looking at becoming more familiar with the big issues and considering the practical steps we can all take. For example, recent sessions have covered recycling of plastics on a day-to-day basis and how to refill rather than replace where possible. We also discussed an overview of all the many new technologies for renewable energy generation and their likelihood, costs and timescales. Also, inviting a local school so we can listen to younger people’s view about what our generation can do.
Upcoming this summer are a discussion with practical local examples on road run-off, rivers and the environment, a trip by bus to Tuppenny Farm, a pioneering eco-friendly agricultural and regeneration project with an excellent café where we will hear a talk and, hopefully, also a participation session with CDC. Also a picnic using Book-a-Bus for our whole group.
The way this group runs is by asking each member, wherever they feel comfortable, to lead or organise their part of a programme, rather than it being ‘top-down’. We work with other organisations such as Eco Rother Action to raise awareness on the key issues.
The schedule is available from the Group Leader. New members welcome subject to capacity at individual sessions.
