Artists have frequently depicted themselves with the tools of their trade especially but not always - in self portraits. In this lecture Alexandra will look at the significance of artists’ materials and their studios, and how they are represented in art. She will focus specifically on pigments and palettes, and how they can become motifs, symbols , and mirrors of an artist’s occupation.

Alexandra is has written a book on Artists Palettes for Thames & Hudson ( publication date: 2024). She is Curator of the Royal Pavilion, Brighton.
